Remember this game? Tempest was an arcade release in early 1980's however made its way to the PC, Saturn, Atari, and Macnitosh in June of '94. This retro shooter was one of the first of its kind to tap into "3D". Tempest soon became fairly popular. I remember playing Tempest on my family's first computer, back when I was in middle school, and thinking it was one of the coolest games out there (besides Minesweeper of course). Hours of my time went to blasting away at the spikes that were left behind from the annoying Spiker enemy. All this while I desperately tried to acquire another life before I died. At the end of the day, it was a colorful, quick-paced, addicting, techno-filled bundle of gaming fun.

Well Atari has resurrected the classic. Released recently, Tempest is back in all its glory. For five bucks you can log onto Xbox Live and download the renewed relic. They've updated the graphics and music, while keeping the same old-school Tempest goodness. It supports 16:9 , 480p, 720p, and 1080i, along with Dolby Digital 5.1 so you can bask in the rainbow of colors.

Is it worth the five bucks? Despite it being an instant classic, you probably could find the old Tempest for download online. With the advancing state of gaming these days, it would be difficult for even the new Tempest to hold your attention for an extending period of time. If you're really hardcore, then go buy it; the price tag isn't that bad for the game. It also includes 12 achievements for you to acquire. Overall Tempest is fun and will bring back memories to those who have played the original.
